Vestra Vera Press Interviews Me The Mountain

Anthony Green: Beautiful Things review

Beautiful Things is Anthony Green’s sophomore solo release. Since his first solo record, Avalon and Circa Survive’s major label debut, Blue Sky Noise, Green has gone through an array of hardships and triumphs with which to fuel this record. From the birth of his first son, to his struggle with a number of mental illnesses, Green has a lot to say and the result is one of the most sincere and diverse albums in recent memory.

Once again, Green enlists the help of the band Good Old War to provide the instrumentation for the record. This time around, the music seems to have been more of a collaborative effort between the band and Green, giving a fresh sound to the album, setting it apart from Green’s solo debut.

While most of the record is heavily folk and blues influenced, there is plenty of diversity. The dream-like “When I’m On Pills” features a simple electro-dub instrumentation accompanying Green’s soft vocals, “Can’t Have It All At Once” showcases the heavier, grittier side of the band and “Blood Song” (influenced by 2007 film, There Will Be Blood) is a faux-country rocker that really stands out from the rest of the album.

Lyrically, Green opts to abandon shrouding each song in metaphor as he’s done so often (and so well) in the past. Maybe for the first time we are clearly able to understand his perspective of his own life through his music and it makes for very interesting material. From arguments with his wife heard on “When I’m On Pills,” and just dealing with growing up on “Get Yours While You Can,” Beautiful Things is the most honest record Green has ever put out.

One of the most prominent topics is James Green, Anthony Green’s one-year-old son. In “Love you No Matter What,” Green sings, “Even if spikes grow from out of your head/And you’re spitting vomit fire all on the bed/And you grow up to hate me, completely insane/The ending will be the same/I’ll love you no matter what.” Green also dedicates two more songs, “James Song” and “Lullaby,” to his son, who is an apparent light in Green’s world after he and his wife went through a number of miscarriages before.

Anthony Green is known very well for his quality musicianship. There is nothing that he has been a part of that isn’t worth a listen and Beautiful Things keeps this streak going. The record give us a clear view into the life of an extremely talented musician who is as tormented as he is blessed and offers an inspiring story of someone who always finds a way to pick himself up off the ground.

Mending the Mess benefit show CANCELLED

As some of you might have known, Vestra Vera Press was going to put on a benefit show in order to raise money for those struggling from the natural disasters that occurred in the U.S. and Japan earlier this year. Unfortunately, and as much as this pains me to say, Mending the Mess has been cancelled for many different reasons but mainly because of venue cancellation.
Know that the folks over here at Vestra Vera Press are extremely disappointed, but that doesn’t mean that we should stop from supporting the people who are experiencing daily struggles because of these tragedies. Donate now to the American Red Cross today!

Alternative Press releases an exclusive streaming of The Devil Wears Prada's new song "Born to Lose":

Check out this exclusive stream of “Born To Lose” from the Devil Wears Prada’s new, still-untitled album, out Sept. 13 on Ferret. Vocalist Mike Hranica offers up his thoughts on TDWP’s new work:

“The new record contains the heavy aspects of the Zombie EP, meshed with the melody of the full-lengths. ‘Born To Lose’ captures some of those elements and serves as a comprehensive preview to the album. By all means I’d call it our most emotional, well-written album to date.”

If you are fans of Envy on the Coast, Say Anything or Circa Survive, I The Mighty is the band for you! I The Mighty is a progressive/alternative band from San Francisco, California. Their unique personalities and their passion for what they do was revealed when I had the opportunity to sit down with Brent Walsh (Lead Vocalist & Guitarist), Ian Pedigo (Guitarist) and Blake Dahlinger (Drummer) after opening for Forever the Sickest Kids and Anarbor at Slim’s in San Francisco.

The band’s catchy name, I The Mighty, was not their original name. A record label in San Francisco, that no longer works with the band, thought the band needed a new name.

Originally, the band name was Breakpoint. The guys had to make a quick decision and the name I The Mighty fit the bill. “The name I The Mighty actually came from one of our older songs called ‘I The Mighty Defeatist’,” says guitarist, Ian.

Brent explains how the band came together: “Ian and I were an acoustic duo for a while. When we were starting to look for other members, we met Blake at a show of ours and Chris was in a practice space next to ours. Chris would do some background vocals and some bass parts, we became friends and, well, here we are.”

I The Mighty likes to start the writing process with Brent’s lyrics. Blake says, “We like to describe our music in a view of a songwriter aspect. Brent’s lyrics are a really important part of our music; we enjoy story telling through our music.” As the process continues, band members contribute their own element to the song. As Brent said, they like to “jam it out.” Ian explains how they handle when creativity is blocked. “A way for me to get rid of it is when I discover a new band. Listening to new music inspires me to write new music. Also, going on vacation is a good way to get inspired. The different sceneries you see can really help.”

Ultimately, the band’s goal is to be able to connect to people through a rhythmic and melodic level. Their incredible stage presence and dedication to their music is inspiring for other musicians. I The Mighty has consistently shown their musical growth in the local music scene. They prove this by their recent signing with Equal Vision Records (Congratulations guys). Lydia frontman Leighton Antelman has exclusively revealed to Altpress that he and drummer Craig Taylor will bring the band back from hiatus to record a new album this summer. Antelman says you can expect the full-length by late summer or early fall. Lydia went their separate ways last year after seven years and three full-lengths.

He says, “After what was a crazy year of writing, recording, performing, moving to California, and much thinking, I have a few things I’d like to share. I wrote a full album over the past year and am about to fly to Atlanta in a week and a half with Craig (Lydia’s drummer) to track and record it. I’ve had a lot of time to think over the past months and would like to announce a few things formally. Lydia is going to be putting out a brand new full length album during late summer/early fall of this 2011 year. If it were up to me Lydia would have never have had to break up. It was never my intension in any way, but there were a few things out of my control. There’s nothing I can do about that now, but would like to say that these problems are all done and gone. Our amazing fans’ continuous emails and support for more Lydia music makes me smile. As futile as you might have thought all your emails were, they were not a waste. I am beyond excited about this new full length album we are recording this month. Craig and myself have always worked very hard in the studio to bring you Lydia records, and we will do so once again in a few weeks. I can’t wait until you all can hear this.”

In addition, Antelman tells us about his collaboration with producer Matt Malpass called the Cinema. He says, “The Cinema are releasing our first track and an introduction video today as well, check that out at facebook.com/thecinemamusic. We have been writing and recording music for some months now and are ecstatic to finally be able to release this. There’s going to be a few more tracks coming out in the coming weeks so pop em in that Walkman, hit those streets. You can visit all the Cinema’s pages for the latest on everything.”

So I was driving back to my house last week listening to New Found Glory. It was sunny out in Massachusetts (for once) so of course the pop punk playlist comes out to play. One of my favorite songs from this band is Dressed To Kill and have always wanted to do my own version of it… And so I got home and recorded it in my basement. Added some mandolin and lap steel for dramatic effect, and now I give you Dressed To Kill. Enjoy.
